Cooking's a Game for Couple

- By Joanna Enderlin (The Virginian-Pilot)

The game Virginia Beach couple John and Amy Franks created to amuse their dinner guests was such a big hit that friends were always telling them to patent it. After a few years in development, Convivium, "A Casual Dinner Party Board Game" is a reality. Convivium was well received at last months Food and Gourmet Show in San Francisco.

The object of the game is to play your way through the preparation of a great meal. Played in "courses," it comes with a game board, dice, game pieces and the like, but the game card' subjects are food trivia, conversation topics and fill-in-the-blank toasts. This original version (others are planned for in the future) is the Mexican Fiesta Edition and includes shopping lists for the hosts and detailed preparation instructions for an easy but tasty meal. Appetizer, entree and dessert rounds are played to determine who will be the beverage manager, chef, wait staff and winner - who sits back and is served - for each course. The game can get pretty competitive but the food and fun means everyone wins.

Look for Convivium to show up on the shelves at local gourmet shops in the coming weeks or order online at Convivium's web site, thecookinggame.com.
